Dancing in the Dark. MTV, Music Videos, Bruce Springsteen and the Aesthetics of Rock in the Eighties

Abstract

Sebbene siano nati negli anni settanta, i video musicali sono considerati uno dei simboli culturali e mediali degli anni Ottanta. Questo articolo si focalizza  sull'estetica dei videoclip da una prospettiva che vuole andare oltre l'approccio postmodernista tipico delle prime analisi del periodo.
Nel paper, il video musicale degli anni  Ottanta viene analizzato come dispositivo narrativo per costruire l’immagine e l'estetica del performer musicale, soprattutto  in relazione ai generi musicali e al loro significato simbolico e culturale.
Da questo punto di vista i video musicali rock degli anni Ottanta sono particolarmente interessanti poiché in essi confluiscono e si intrecciano tre caratteristiche: la spettacolarizzazione televisiva, le dinamiche e gli obbiettivi promozionali imposti dall'industria discografica e la necessità di rappresentare il performer/musicista come personaggio coerente e credibile, secondo gli stilemi tipici del genere.
In particolare, il paper analizza la produzione di un artista rock simbolo di quel decennio: Bruce Springsteen, che ha sperimentato diverse forme di video musicali e diverse estetiche, provando a far convivere la necessità di promuovere la sua musica su MTV con la sua immagine di un "autentico” performer rock.
