We are pleased to present the new issue of ZoneModa Journal focusing on children and fashion and edited by Roberto Farné and Marcella Terrusi, experts in pedagogy, play, literature and childhood culture. The essays in this issue show that the fashion-childhood relationship needs to be analysed from a multi-disciplinary perspective to grasp its complexities: from representations of children’s bodies and their clothing in literature, fashion illustrations, photography and visual culture in general and all the media which accompany fashion, now a medium in its own right and thus itself capable of influencing the various levels of perception of childhood. As you will see, the historical and sociological considerations reveal a common theme running unbroken through education and fashion. In particular, taking on this theme, as the editors explain in the Introduction of the issue, brings out the complexity of the social construction of childhood in fashion, a sector of enquiry in which new research perspectives are opening up. In fact, whilst the academic scholarship on childhood is considerable, both in Italy and around the world, attention to the fashion theme is much more limited and we thus believe that this ZMJ issue’s innovative and original approach may contribute to widening the debate and stimulating new thought on the subject.
